Source: GNA - About 300 women in the Tamale Metropolis were screened for breast cancer in an exercise organized by My Life Fair Organization, an NGO, as part of activities to mark this year’s World Breast Cancer Day.
The event, which was marked with a float on some streets of the metropolis on Friday, was to sensitize the public, especially women, about breast cancer and the need for regular examination.

World Breast Cancer Day is marked in October every year to raise awareness about the disease.

Mr Justice Kanor Tetteh, Project Manager of My Life Fair Organization described breast cancer as a silent killer disease, hence the sensitization of women on the disease to ensure regular examination of their breasts so that they seek early treatment where required.

He said the NGO would follow-up on cases that would be referred to hospitals for treatment and help to facilitate its treatment.

He said the NGO had been embarking on monthly free medical screening in rural areas across the country as part of efforts to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Dr Vera Darko of the Internal Medicine Department of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, who was part of the medical team that screened the women, said most of the women did not know how to personally examine their breasts and needed to be educated on that.

Madam Memuna Baba, one of the beneficiaries, thanked the NGO for the exercise and advised women to go for regular check-up of their breasts.
